This week we are praying for Comoros Islands, which are in the Indian Ocean about halfway between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, off the coast of southeast Africa, northwest of northern Madagascar and off the eastern coast of northern Mozambique. There are 4 major islands in this archipelago of volcanic islands. The biggest volcano is Mount Karthala that last erupted in 2005. It is a mostly an agricultural nation with some tourism. It exports vanilla, cloves and perfume essences. The culture is a fusion of African and Arabic. The main language is a mixed Swahili dialect. It gained its independence from France in 1975, and suffered some 20 coups until the 21st century when there have been several peaceful turnovers of power after elections. It has a reputation of being the best Islamic country for women because women have some legally protected rights. It is 98% Suni Muslim, and 57% literate.
